Biography

Dr. Khan was graduated (MBBS) from Calcutta Medical College in 1952. He got his Post graduation degrees viz. DT&MH (Edinburgh, 1957), DCH (London, 1957), MRCP (Edinburgh, 1962), FCPS (Bangla- desh, 1974) and FRCP (Edinburgh, 1978).

For his outstanding contribution in the field of health and social development, he has been awarded - Gold Medal for Social Work, Ministry of Social Welfare, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, 1999; Ibn Sina Gold Medal for contribution in medicine & child health, 1999; Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Gold Medal for contribution in Child Health & Social Work, 1998; Poet Sorojine Naidu Gold Medal for outstanding service as a doctor and social worker, 1997; Ex Chief Minister Abu Hossain Sarker National Award and Gold Medal for outstanding contribution in medicine and social work, 1995; National Professor, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, 1995; Bangladesh Pediatric Association Award for contribution in the field of child health, 1994; Moulana Bhashani Gold Medal for outstanding work for child health, 1994; Moulana Tarko Baghis Gold Medal Award for child health and social work, 1993; Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam National Award and Gold Medal, 1993; Gold Medal, Sher-e-Bangla Jatiyo Smrity Sangsad, 1992; World Astrological Society Award, 1992; Association of Pediatrics from South East Asia Region, Manila Award, 1991; Satkhira Jono Samity Award, 1991; Satkhira Press Club Award, 1990. Professor Khan’s Biography has been included in the International WHO is WHO of Intellectuals (7th edition) published by Biographical Centre (IBC) Camridge, U.K. 1997; Gold Medal for contribution in child health, 1986.
Dr. Khan joined public service in 1963 in Dhaka Medical College as an Associate Professor and retired as a Professor of Pediatrics IPGM&R in 1988. Before his retirement, he served Rajshahi Medical College, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and other Institutions in different capacities. He put a special contribution for establishing Paediatric unit in Rajshahi Medical College in 1964 - 1965 and strengthening Dhaka Shishu Hospital in 1978 - 1979. He introduced FCPS, DCH & MCPS in Pediatrics in 1972. He is the Founder President of Bangladesh Pediatric Association. He is the senior most teacher of Pediatrics in Bangladesh and has been called “Father of Pediatrics in Bangladesh”.
Presently, he is a Senior Visiting Professor of ICDDR,B since 1989; Professor and Founder Director and Chairman of the Institute of Child Health and Shishu Hospital, Mirpur, Dhaka. Among the most important attachments, he is the Vice-Chairman, Jatiya Samaj Kalyan Parishad of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Chairman of Polio Eradication Certification Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It may be mentioned here, he is the first introducer of vaccines against Polio, Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus in Bangladesh in January, 1965 using ‘Quatro Virilon'- a combined vaccine produced by the Hoechst.

Professor Khan is the founder of a number of voluntary social development organisations viz. Shishu Sasthya Foundation, Bangladesh (SSF, B), Institute of Child Health and Shishu Hospital (ICH-SH), Mirpur, Dhaka; Satkhira Shishu Hospital, Shishu Hospital, Jessore and Vocational Training Centre (VTC), Satkhira. SSF, B is established in 1983, through which some lacs women and children are getting direct services in the field of health, nutrition, education, microcredit, environmental promotion and protection. Presently, some 5,000 families are provided microcredit supports for small scale income generation activities. ICH-SH is a 50 beded child hospital providing out-door, indoor and diagnostic services to some 300 children every day. Satkhira Shishu Hospital and Shishu Hospital, Jessore are 30 and 10 beded hospital, respectively with out-door and diagnostic services. VTC is providing vocational training for 90 working children each year in Electric, Turning, Carpentry, Dress-making and Light engine mechanics. With his all pensions and gratuity fund on his retirement from public service, he established the ‘Dr. M. R. Khan and Anwara Trust’. Through this Trust, Dr. Khan is providing assistance to different mosques, schools, hospitals and a number of destitute women in Satkhira as well as other social welfare activities. This Trust fund is awarding Gold Medal to the individuals for their outstanding contribution in the field of social and economic development in the country. Till date the awardees are Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Bank; Mr. Fazle Hasan Abed, BRAC; Ms. Velori Taylor, CRP, Ms. Angela Gomez, Banchte Shekha, Khandker Shahidul Islam, Dr. Sultana Zaman and others.Dr. Khan established a number of educational institutions, namely Rasulpur Secondary School and Women Medical College, Uttara, Dhaka - the 1st Women Medical College in the country (established with his other colleagues). He has also established hospitals, namely Nebedita Nursing Home, Dhaka and Central Hospital, Dhaka - one of the largest and modern hospitals in private sector.
