Seminar on Bioinformatics: Prospects and Opportunities for Bangladesh, 05 August 2008

The Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka jointly organized a seminar on Bioinformatics: Prospects and Opportunities for Bangladesh at the Center of Excellence, University of Dhaka on 05 August 2008. Professor Dr. SMA Faiz, Vice Chancellor, University of Dhaka inaugurated the seminar as the Chief Guest and Professor Dr. AFM Yusuf Haider, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University were present as the Special Guests. Professor Dr. M. Shamsher Ali, President, BAS chaired and Professor Dr. Naiyyum Choudhury, Secretary, BAS delivered the welcome address.  Dr. Hasan Jamil, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, Wayne State University, USA delivered lecture on From Bio-information to Biotechnology: Economies, Education and State Policies, Dr. Abdur Rahman Sikder, Post Doctoral Research Scientist, ICSI, University of California at Berkeley, USA presented a paper on Promises of genomics and bioinformatics in Bangladesh and Professor Animesh Ray, Keck Graduate Institute, Claremont, California, USA delivered a talk on The New Biology: The Network Metaphor  as the keynote speakers. The invited panel speakers were Mr. Shamsuzzaman Bayzid, Lecturer Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, BUET, Professor Md. Kaykobad of Dept of Computer Science and Engineering, BUET, and Prof. Ahmed Shamsul Islam, Scientist, UT and GNOBB Moderator. Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand, Chairman Dept. of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka, delivered vote of thanks. About 100 students, teachers of the Universities and scientists from R & D organizations were present at the seminar.
