Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, Nobel Laureate and a world renowned scientist was born on 25 March, 1914 in Cresco, Iowa, USA. He was married to Margaret Gison and has two children.
He got B. S. Forestry, University of Minnesota, 1937; M.S. Plant Pathology, 1940, University of Minnesota; Ph.D. Plant Pathology, 1941, University of Minnesota.
Dr. Borlaug worked in various capacities in the U.S.A. and many other countries particularly as consultant to various International Organisations such as FAO, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center etc.
Dr. Borlaug was member of a large number of learned societies throughout the world and was awarded Honorary D.Sc. degree by several Universities both in the U.S.A. and other countries, particularly developing countries for his contribution to food production. He was also awarded Doctor of Agricultural Sciences from various Institutions of the world. He was a recipient of many other academic and scientific achievement awards. He was honoured by a large number of Academies of Sciences all over the world by offering him Honorary Foreign Fellowships.
Dr. Borlaug received Distinguished Service Awards from various Governments and civil authorities and was honorary citizen of a large number of countries. Most of these awards had been bestowed on him because of his dedicated effective service to international agriculture and the well-being of mankind throughout the world. His outstanding work involved plant breeding and cereal production.
Dr. Borlaug traveled to many countries of the globe and worked selflessly for the advancement of science for feeding the teaming millions. Many institutions and centres of excellence have been established in his name in order to perpetuate his contributions as a living monument of his outstanding work for the future.
Dr. Borlaug expired on 12 September 2009.
