Professor Golam Abu Zakaria was born on 31 December, 1953 in Naogaon, Bangladesh.

He had early education at Naogaon K.D.High School (1963-1968); HSC at Rajshahi Government College (1969-1970). He was a student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) during 1970-1972 and left for Germany for higher studies with a Government Scholarship. He studied Physics at the University Halle-Wittenberg leading to Diploma and Masters Degree with specialization in Medical Physics at the Radiological Hospital, University of Halle (1976-1978).

Dr. Zakaira was Research Fellow and completed Post-graduate study at the Department of Radiation Physics and Biology, University Hospital, University of Goettingen, Germany (1979-1980). He earned Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg in 1985 and worked as Principal Medical Physicist at the Department of Radiotherapy and Nuclearmedicine at Gummersbach Teaching Hospital, University of Cologne, Germany.

Since 1987, Professor Zakaria has been working as Chairman and Chief Medical Physicist at the Department of Medical Radiation Physics, Gummersbach Teaching Hospital, Germany. In 1990, he got the recognition as a qualified Expert in Medical Radiation Physics from the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP).

Dr. Zakaria was a Visiting Professor at Gono Bishwabidyalay, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2001. He is continuing work as Professor (Visiting) and Co-ordinator for International Cooperation of Medical Physics at this University since 2001.

He is the Chairman of the DGMP-Working Group medical Physics in developing countries of the German Society for Medical Physics since 2001.

Since 2003, he has been working as Professor of Clinical Engineering at the Anhalt Unviersity of Applied Sciences, Koethen, Germany. He is also Teacher (Part-time) of the International Master Study in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, M.M. Center, University of Heidelberg.

Dr. Zakaria supervised research of many students leading to Diplomas, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. He is Member of German Society for Medical Physics; European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology; American Association of Physicists in Medicine; Association of Medical Physicists of India; Bangladesh Medical Physicists Society (Honorary).

Professor Zakaria has more than 65 scientific papers published in Interantioanl Journals. He delivered a number of invited lectures and a series of other lectures in universities and conferences in European, Asian and African countries.

He is member of Editorial Board of several journals.

Dr. Zakaria initiated many scientific collaboration and activities in Bangladesh. He established the Department of “Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering” with a masters course at the Gono Bishwabidyalay, Savar, Bangladesh. He also established a scientific collaboration and exchange training programme between National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH), Dhaka and Darmstadt Hospital, Darmstadt for Bangladeshi radio- oncologists and medical physicists in Germany. He established a ‘Secondary High School’ (1999) in a rural area of Naogaon. In 2008, he started a new project “Mother-Child Health Care Centre”. This centre will provide medical support to numerous poor people to the rural areas of Bangladesh.
