Jiban Podder is a Professor of Physics, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh where he has been teaching since 1989. Podder was born in Narayanganj, Bangladesh on 24th December 1959. He passed secondary school certificate in 1975 from Narayanganj High School and higher secondary certificate in 1977 from Dhaka College under the Dhaka board. He received his B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. in Physics from Dhaka University in 1980 and 1981, respectively. Podder received his M.Phil in 1987 from BUET and Ph.D in Physics from BUET in 1995 under the research collaboration of Anna University, India. Podder joined at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission as a Scientific Officer in 1987. He joined as a lecturer in the Department of Physics, BUET in 1989, became an Assistant Professor in 1992, Associate Professor in 1998 and full Professor in 2002. Dr. Podder pursued Postdoctoral research at Anna University, India, during 2000-2001 under ICTP funding and Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan under JSPS fellowship during 2003-2005. Prof. Podder was Head of the Department of Physics from December 2005 to December 2007. Prof. Podder served the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Canada as Visiting Professor from June 2012 to September 2015 and October 2021 to September 2022 on his sabbatical.

Research Contributions, Supervisions and Publications:

Dr. Podder’s area of research has focused on growth kinetics, Non-linear optical crystals, compound semiconductor thin films, nano-materials for optoelectronic and photonic applications. Prof. Podder has supervised so far 19 M.Sc, 30 M. Phil. and Ph.D students. Prof. Podder has evaluated over 180 Ph.D theses from different Universities around the world. As of 2021, Prof. Podder has published over 185 research articles in peer reviewed journals and proceedings and contributed 80 invited talks at various National/International Conferences and author of ‘Applied Engineering Physics: Electricity and Magnetism’ for Science and Engineering students and one U. S Provisional Patent Apl. No. 61/932662‘Methods and Apparatus for Crystallization of Salts’. Prof. Podder is also involved as a principal investigator with many research projects supported by University Grants Commission of Bangladesh and Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Bangladesh, and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

Podder worked at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission as a Scientific Officer from June 987 to February 1989 and he developed the Neutron Radiography facilities at the TRIGA-Mark-II research reactor (3MW) and further he developed some shielding materials for gamma and neutrons under the Reactor and Neutron Physics Division at the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology, AERE, Savar.

Single crystal plays an important role in the development of microelectronics, optoelectronics and fast electronic applications. The rapid development of optical communication system has led to a demand for nonlinear optical materials for high performance in electronics, optoelectronics devices. Considering the importance of this field, Prof. Podder has developed a crystal growth laboratory in the Department of Physics, BUET in 1995. Both organic and inorganic, semi-organic device quality singles crystals have been grown in the laboratory from low temperature solution growth technique.

Thin film technology is a developed field encompassing a wide range of applications such as electronics, optical communications, and bio-systems. Considering the importance of this emerging field, Prof. Podder has developed a low cost spray pyrolysis deposition lab in the Department of Physics, BUET, Dhaka in 2005. A series of high quality transparent metal oxides thin films of ZnO, CuO, SnO2, MnO, MnO2, Mn2O3, Mn3O4, NiO, WO3, In2O3, CdO, Fe2O3, Co3O4 have been synthesized via. Thermal Spray Pyrolysis technique and also giving attention for fabricating gas sensor, bio sensor devices using low cost materials and local technology.

Scientific Awards, Extra Curriculum Activities and Volunteering Services:

Prof. Podder is involved with different Science clubs viz., ‘Satyen Bose Science Club-BUET’, Annesha Science Society, Bigaan Porishod to motivate the young researchers, undergrad and post-grad students. Over the year he delivered couple of lectures and scientific talks in BTV- "Mohabissher Pothe Pothe for Popularizing Science". Prof. Podder is a recipients of ‘BAAS-Award’1991 and BAAS-Award 1998 for the best research presentation, Young Scientist Award by ICCG-13 & ICVGE-11, 2001, Japan, ICTP Fellowship, 2000 Italy, COSTED-Anna University-DST Fellowship, Govt. of India, 1993, JSPS Fellowship, 2003-2005, Japan, ’ICRAAS-2016’ award by Indian Spectro Physics Association and St. Peters University, India, ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ in 2018 by AMET and Indian Spectro Physics Association, India, Prof. Podder is serving as a reviewer to many reputed International Journals and now serving as Editor-in-Chief.Bangladesh Journal of Scientific Research..
