Professor Ahmad Husain was born at Lakshimpur, Noakhali, Bangladesh on 1st February, 1928.
He had a brilliant academic career from the School level to M.Sc. degree. He secured the B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in Physics from Dhaka University in 1949 and 1950, respectively and was placed in the First position with First Class credits. He did his Ph.D. from the University of London in Nuclear Physics in 1953.
He was appointed a Lecturer in Physics at the University of Dhaka in 1956 and Reader in Physics in 1957. He was appointed Reader and Head of the Department of Physics of the newly established Rajshahi University in 1958 and secured the Professorship of Physics of the same University in 1962. He continued as the Head of the Department of Physics till 1979.
Prof. Husain got Royal Exhibition Scholorship which was awarded to him in 1951 by the Royal Commission, London. He carried out research work in Nuclear Physics at the National Research Laboratories at Ottawa, Canada from 1953 - 1955 as a Post-doctoral Fellow.
He has to his credit a large number of research publications in Nuclear Physics in reputed journals of Science and Physics at home and abroad.
He had been the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Rajshahi University for the periods 1962 - 1963, 1970 - 1971 and 1980 - 1982. He also held the position of Provost of two Halls of residence of students at Rajshahi University from 1964 - 1967 and also Member of the Syndicate, Rajshahi University for several terms.
Prof. Dr. Husain participated in various international science conferences in many countries of the world as a delegate on behalf of the Government and as a nominee of the various Ministries and of the University. He had been involved in a number of research projects on cosmic radiations and in Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics.
Dr. Husain had been Member of the Academic Conucils of different Universities in Bangladesh and erstwhile Pakistan. He was also a Member of a number of learned bodies such as the erstwhile Pakistan Association for the Advancement of Science; Pakistan Association of Scientists and Scientific Professions; American Association for the Advancement of Science; Member, Inter University Board of Pakistan. He was elected a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 1975. He was the President of Bangladesh Physical Society from 1979 - 1981.
Professor Ahmad Husain expired on 1 July 2002.
