Emeritus Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam was born in Jhenidah, Jashore, Bangladesh on 24 February, 1939.
He obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) from Calcutta University and B.A. (Hons.) and M. A. from the University of Cambridge, U. K. He received Honours with distinction; Rouse Ball Mathematical Prize and Tripos Examination Prize, Trinity College, Cambridge, 1959 and 1960, respectively. He was also educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and was awarded the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge in 1964 and the D.Sc. degree from the same University in 1982.
Dr. Islam was Professor and Director, Research Centre for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (RCMPS), CU 1963-1965; Post-doctoral Fellow, University of Cambridge, 1965-1966; Staff Member, Institute of Theoretical Astronomy, University of Cambridge, 1967-1971; Visiting Member, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, 1968, 1973, 1984; Visiting Associate in Physics, California Institute of Technology, 1971-1972; Senior Research Associate, Department of Astronomy, University of Washington, 1972-1973; Temporary Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, King's College, London, 1973-1974; Science Research Council Fellow, University College, City University, London, 1978-1984; Visiting Fellow, Clare Hall, Cambridge, 1987; Professor of Mathematics, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, 1984-1989. Director, Research Center for Mathematical and Physicsal Sciences (RCMPS), Chittagong University from 1989 till his death.
Prof. Islam’s research fields included Theoretical Physics, particularly relativity, cosmology and quantum field theory.
Dr. Islam got the Gold Medal of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences for Physical Sciences (Senior Group), 1985. Ekushey Padak in 2001 and Science and Technology, Medal in 1999.
Dr. Islam has more than 50 research papers mostly published in the international journals of sciences. He authored seven books of international repute and was acclaimed all over the world. He has a number of publications in the field of popular sciences and other fields of learning.
Dr. Islam was a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society; Royal Astronomical Society and Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. Life Member, Clare Hall, Cambridge; President, Bangladesh Mathematical Society, 1990-1991. Fellow, Asiatic Sociaty of Bangladeh and Fellow, Islamic Academy of Sciences. Dr. Islam was a visiting Fellow of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Cambridge, 1991; and Visiting Scientist, ICTP, Italy; Visiting Scientist, Institute des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques Bureas-Sur Yvette, France, 1991; Visiting scholar, Research Institute for Mathametical Sciences, Kyoto University, Japan, 1994.
Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam was a member of various administrative organisations such as UGC, Senate of Chittagong University and BIT, Chittagong.
He visited many countries in connection with the participation in the conferences, seminars, symposia etc.
He expired on 15 March 2013
