Dr. Mohammad Kaykobad was born on 1 May, 1954 in the village Jabra of District Manikganj.

He had his early education in Baniajuri Union High School, Manikganj Government High School and Devendra College, Manikganj. He received M.S. (Hons.) in Engineering from Odessa Marine  Engineering Institute in 1979. In 1982 he received an M.Eng. degree from the Division of Computer Applications Technology, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. He completed his Ph.D. in 1986 from the Flinders University of South Australia.

Dr. Kaykobad worked as a Senior Scientific Officer at the Institute of Computer Science, Atomic Energy Research Establishment for over three years prior to joining the CSE Department, BUET in 1991. He served as the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of BUET during 1996-1999. He was also a Visiting Professor North South University, Dhaka.

Dr. Kaykobad’s research interest includes Computer Mathematics, Theory of computational Complexity and Design and Analysis of Algorithms. He has published research papers in journals like Physical Review, International Journal of Computer Mathematics, International Journal of Computers and Operations Research, International Journal of Computers and Mathematics with Applications, Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Information Processing Letters, Information Processing and Management and the Journal of Computers and Graphics. In addition, he constantly contributes to national and international conferences.

Dr. Kaykobad has published more than 45 papers in various international journals.

He is also reviewer of several international journals. He was the Organizing Chairman of the first of the series of conferences known as International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (ICCIT) held in Bangladesh. He has been able to guide more than a dozen undergraduate students to carry out commendable research work, results of which were published in journals of international repute.

Dr. Kaykobad has authored, co-authored or edited 13 books in the areas of computer science and engineering, mathematics and inspirational ones for young kids. He is a frequent column writer in National Dailies covering various issues of national interest including education, science and technology. He has profound interest in improving programming skill of our youngsters.

Dr. Kaykobad was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Chinese University of Hong Kong during the years 2000 and 2001. He also held the prestigious IT Scholar Visiting Professorship award at Kyung Hee University, Korea in 2005. Dr. Kaykobad was recognized as the Outstanding Coach at Honolulu, Hawaii in the 26th World Finals of ACM ICPC. He was awarded the best IT teacher award in 2000 by Bangladesh Computer Samitee. In year 2005 he was awarded a Gold Medal by Bangladesh Computer Society for his contribution to computer programming culture in the country. He was also selected by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences for the Gold Medal in Physical Sciences among senior scientists for the year 2004.

He has been one of the pioneers in introducing Mathematics Olympiad and Olympiad in Informatics in Bangladesh. He was the observer and the leader of Bangladesh team to International Olympiad in Informatics, respectively in 2004 and 2005. He led BUET teams to the prestigious World finals of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) seven years in a row with a very inspiring 11th place in the year 2000, among 60 teams selected from 1968 teams of 1041 Universities of 69 countries on 6 Continents competing at 82 sites.

Dr. Kaykobad was the Coordnator of the Science Olympiad conducted by the Bangladesh Acdemy of Sciences for several years and was also a Member of the Editioral Board of the Journal of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.

Professor Kaykobad served as a Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) from 1997.  He is now serving as a Distinguished Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Enginnering, BRAC Unversity.
