Professor Harun K. M. Yusuf was born on 31 January, 1947 in Bhola (Barisal), Bangladesh.


He did B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry with First Position in First Class, Dhaka University, 1968; M.Sc. in Biochemistry with First Position in First Class, Dhaka University, 1969; Ph.D. in Human Nutrition, University of Surrey, England, 1976.


Dr. Yusuf was a Lecturer (1970-1976), Assistant Professor (1976- 1979), Associate Professor (1979-1985) and Professor (1985-2009) in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dhaka University; Part-time Faculty of the James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University (2005-2009).


He conducted research on Trends and patterns in food consumption and nutrition of rural and urban poor in Bangladesh with BRAC/Imperial College, London.


He was associated with National Low Birth Weight and Anaemia Survey in Bangladesh-2003-BRAC/BBS/ UNICEF. Responsibility: Principal Investigator-in-charge: Planning and implementing training of field staff, preparation of questionnaires, writing questionnaire and instrument manuals, supervision and monitoring, data analysis plan, writing report. He also worked on  Food consumption and nutritional status of people in selected production and consumption areas of Bangladesh - Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology, Govt. of Bangladesh. Responsibility: Principal Investigator with full responsibility of implementing all project activities in field and laboratory. He was involved in Building of nutrition components in World Food Programme (WFP) country programmes (2006-2010). Responsibility:  Examination of WFP programmes and improvement of nutrition components in various programme activities. He conducted National Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and Universal Salt Iodization (USI) surveys of Bangladesh 2004-2005.  Promotion and advocacy on functional foods in Bangladesh.


Dr. Harun received H. P. Roy Gold Medal by the Dhaka University, 1979; Justice Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal by the Dhaka University, 1991; Halima-Sharafuddin Award by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (1993); Nutrition Award by the Nutrition Society of Bangladesh, 2002; Commonwealth scholarship offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK, 1973; Post-doctoral Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1981 - 1983) and (1985 - 1986).


Professor Harun has more than 91 scientific publications in the national and international journals and conference proceedings.


He was Vice-Chancellor, Patuakhali Science and Technology University (1999- 2001). Fellow in ICTP, Italy; Fellow, IPPS, Uppsala University, Sweden; Fellow, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.


Professor Harun K. M. Yusuf expired on 11 November 2009.
