Dr. S. D. Chaudhuri, son of Khan Bahadur Mohammed Chaudhuri was born at Sylhet in October, 1917.
He was educated in Government College, Lahore and Presidency College, Calcutta. Earned B.Sc. (Hons.), Ph.D and D.I. C. from Imperial College, London. He received Certificate on Plant Breeding from Beltville Research Institute, U.S.A.
Dr. Chaudhury served as Economic Botanist to the Government of Assam 1946 – 1947; Economic Botanist to the Government of East Pakistan, Dacca, 1947 – 1953 and Director, Jute Research Institute, 1953 - 1961. He was Director of Agriculture, East Pakistan, 1961 – 1963; Vice-Chancellor, Agricultural University, 1963 – 1969.
Dr. Chaudhury received Tamgha-e-Imtiaz; and Sitara-e-Quaid -e-Azam, Lions Gold Medal from Sylhet Lions Club.
He has over 60 scientific and technical papers published in professional journals in the country and abroad.
Dr. Chaudhury was a Consultant to FAO Investment Centre on Horticulture, Rome; International Rice Research Institute, Manila, Philippines; Consultant, Oregon University Mission to Bangladesh Agricultural University and many other Organizations. He was Consultant to USAID on Food Policy and Consultant and Team Member to ADB Mission in Malaysia and Myanmar. Regional Agricultural Adviser FAO, 1974 – 1976; Consultant, Planning Commission, 1972 – 1974 and Member, Planning Commission, 1977 – 1979; and Special Consultant to Asian Development Bank, 1980 - 1984.
As a Research Team Leader, Dr. Chaudhuri was responsible for breeding of several varieties of rice and jute and development of some horticultural crops like, Assam Lemon and Late Valencia in citrus which added extra income to growers.
Dr. Chaudhury was President, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences; Chairman, National Committee on International Geosphere- Biosphere Programme (in link with IGBP, Stockholm).
He was President, Pakistan Association for the Advancement of Sciences; Sectional President in Pakistan on : Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Past Secretary, Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Past President, Inter-University Board of Pakistan, and Past President, Rotary Club of Dhaka.
He made Professional tours to USA, Australia, France, USSR, Sweden, India, Indonesia, Mexico etc and Invitational study tour to USSR, USA and Australia.
Dr. S. D. Chaudhuri breathed his last on 7 October 1997.
