Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Mojid

Dr. Md. Abdul Mojid was born on 1 January 1964 in Belkuchi Upazila, Sirajganj District, Bangladesh. He has established a distinguished academic and research career in soil and water engineering, agricultural water management, groundwater development, and crop–climate–water relations (https://iwm.bau.edu.bd/teachers/IWM1008).

Education and Advanced Training

Dr. Mojid received talent-pool scholarships during his primary and junior education. He obtained his SSC in 1979 from Chowbari Islamia High School, Sirajganj, with First Division and star marks, followed by his HSC in 1981 from Ananda Mohan College, Mymensingh, with First Division. He earned his BSc in Agricultural Engineering, majoring in Irrigation and Water Management, from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, in 1985, securing First Class First Position. He completed his MSc in Irrigation and Water Management from BAU in 1988 with First Class and received his PhD in TDR Technology from the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in 1996 under a Commonwealth Scholarship.

His international postdoctoral and research training includes a two-year JSPS Fellowship at Saga University, Japan (1999–2001); an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany (2001–2002); a 10-month JSPS Invited Fellowship at Saga University (2005–2006); short-term (2 months) JSPS fellowships in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2023; short-term (3-4 weeks) VLIR fellowships at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, during 2006–2011; and an invited fellowship at CSIRO, Canberra, Australia, in 2019.

Professional Career and Leadership

Dr. Mojid began his professional career as a Scientific Officer at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (1988–1990). He joined BAU in 1990 as Lecturer and subsequently served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor, attaining professorship in 2006 and continuing in that position to date. He was also Guest Scientist at Forschungszentrum Jülich (1998) and Adjunct Professor at the Interdisciplinary Institute for Food Security, BAU (2016–2023).

He has held several academic and administrative leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Irrigation and Water Management (2008–2010), and currently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology and Chairman of its Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation for the period 28 August 2025–27 August 2027.

Research, Publications and Supervision

His research encompasses soil and water engineering, on-farm water management, crop–climate–water relations, and groundwater development. As of 30 September 2026, he has published 138 peer-reviewed articles, six edited book chapters, and 12 scientific reports, with approximately 3,800 citations, an h-index of 33, and an i10-index of 64. He has supervised 6 PhD scholars, 52 MS students, and 50 undergraduate projects.

His major research contributions include developing an insulated TDR probe for measuring soil-water content under high-salinity conditions; developing a method for estimating fully developed diffuse double-layer thickness from bulk electrical conductivity in clay, recognized by the UGC as fundamental research; generating scientific evidence on the safe and productive use of municipal wastewater for dry-season irrigation; developing adaptive and conjunctive irrigation strategies for rice production using saline water in coastal Bangladesh; and providing data-driven guidelines for sustainable groundwater development and management in north-western Bangladesh.

Awards and Professional Recognition

His distinctions include the UGC Best Student Award, Ramapatinath Memorial Award, BAU University Prize, UGC Award 2006 for Original Research in Agricultural Science, BAUTA Best Publication Awards in 2020 and 2022, BAURES Global Research Impact Awards in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2024, and recognition in the Stanford–Elsevier Top 2% Scientists in the World rankings in 2024 and 2025.

Professional Engagement

Dr. Mojid is a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh and a Life Member of the Bangladesh Society of Agricultural Engineering, Krishibid Institution Bangladesh, Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association, and Association of Humboldt Fellows Bangladesh. He has served on several editorial and advisory boards and as Guest Editor of a Sustainability special issue on sustainable groundwater resource development for agriculture.

He has visited and collaborated with researchers and institutions in Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, reflecting his extensive international engagement in agricultural water and environmental research.
