Prof. Dr. Mirza Hasanuzzaman

Dr. Mirza Hasanuzzaman is a Professor of Agronomy at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka.

He has completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka where he achieved first class, received a gold medal for being first in his class and earned a Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Award. He also completed a Master of Science in Agronomy from the same university, where he was once again top of his class with a CGPA 4.0 in a scale of 4.0. He received his Ph.D. on ‘Plant Stress Physiology and Antioxidant Metabolism’ from Ehime University, Japan with a scholarship from the Japanese government. Later, he completed his postdoctoral research at the Center of Molecular Biosciences, University of the Ryukyus, Japan, as a recipient of the JSPS postdoctoral fellowship. He was also the recipient of the Australian Government’s Prestigious Endeavour Research Fellowship for postdoctoral research as an Adjunct Senior Researcher at the University of Tasmania, Australia.

Prof. Hasanuzzaman started his career as a Lecturer in the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in June 2006. He was promoted to Professor in June 2017. His areas of research are agronomy, plant stress responses, and crop physiology. His current work is focused on the physiological and molecular mechanisms of environmental stress tolerance (salinity, drought, flood, and heavy metals/metalloids). He has completed several research projects funded by the World Bank, FAO, the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, the Ministry of Science and Technology (Bangladesh), and others. Prof. Mirza Hasanuzzaman is a research supervisor of both undergraduate and graduate students; to date, he has supervised 41 M.S. students and 3 Ph.D. students. He holds several academic and administrative positions at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University including Additional Director (IQAC), Director (ICT), and Provost.

He has established the Crop Science Laboratory at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University where he has facilities to investigate plant stress responses and plant-soil interaction. During the last 18 years he has been investigating the mechanisms of how plants can survive under adverse environments like flood, drought, salinity, and metal toxicity. One of the key mechanisms Prof. Hasanuzzaman is focusing on is antioxidant defense in plants. He is one of the pioneers who has shown that antioxidant defense and glyoxalase systems work coordinately in combating oxidative stress in plants. His laboratory publishes at least 10 articles every year in internationally reputed journals. He has collaborated with researchers from over 30 countries.

Prof. Hasanuzzaman has published over 200 articles in SCI-indexed journals. He has edited 25 books and written 63 book chapters on important aspects of plant physiology, plant stress tolerance, and crop production. These books have been published by world-renowned publishers such as Springer, Elsevier, CRC Press, CABI, and Wiley. According to Google Scholar, Dr. Hasanuzzaman’s publications have received 23,400 citations with an h-index of 79. He is the only Bangladeshi-affiliated author named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate AG. In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of agriculture and plant physiology, he received TWAS Young Scientist Award (Biological Sciences) for the year 2014; UGC Gold Medal 2018, and Distinguished Scientists Award (2020) from AETDS, India and GNOBB Award 2021, Society for Plant Research Young Scientist Award (Agriculture)-2023, and Pathikrit Science Award 2022.

Prof. Hasanuzzaman is editor and reviewer for more than 50 reputed journals and a recipient of the ‘Publons Global Peer Review Award 2017, 2018, and 2019’ which is managed by Web of Science. He is acting Associate Editor of Plant Signaling & Behavior (Taylor and Francis), Frontiers in Plant Science (Switzerland), Phyton (Tech Science Press, USA) and Stresses (MDPI, Switzerland); Academic Editor of PeerJ (USA), Plants (MDPI), Vegetos (Springer); and Member of the Editorial Board of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry (Elsevier), Scientific Reports (Nature), Annals of Agricultural Sciences (Elsevier), Communicative and Integrative Biology (Taylor & Francis) and so on.

He has presented 30 papers at international conferences in several countries.

Prof. Hasanuzzaman is a member of 50 professional societies and is the acting Treasurer of the Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association; Publication Secretary of Weed Science Society of Bangladesh and Publication Secretary of the Bangladesh Society of Agronomy (BSA) and Weed Science Society of Bangladesh, Executive Member of Japanese Universities Alumni Associations in Bangladesh (JUAAB). He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Linnean Society of London, Linnean Society of New South Wales, and Foreign Fellow of the Society for Science of Climate Change and Sustainable Environment, India.

He has visited 38 countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Vatican City, Russia, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, India.
