Professor Lord Sir Jack Lewis (Baron Lewis of Newnham), FRS was born on 13 February, 1928.
He studied at the University of Nottingham, B.Sc., Ph.D., 1946 - 1954. Lecturer, University of Sheffield, 1954 - 1956. Lecturer at Imperial College London, 1956 - 1957.
He was reader, University College London, 1957 - 1962. Chair in Manchester University, 1962-1967. Chair in University College, London 1967-1970. Chair in Inorganic Chemistry, University of Cambridge, 1970 to 1990. Warden Robinson College, Combridge.
Research work of Professor Lewis concerned with transition metal coordination complexes; Magnetic and spectroscopic properties; Metal carbonyl cluster compounds. The reactivity of cluster complexes toward organic reagents. Metal acetylene-polymers. Metal-metal bond in inorganic and organometallic systems.
Professor Lewis was a Fellow of the Royal Society and also Member and Fellow of a very large number of Scientific Societies, Academies and Associations in U. K. and other countries of the world. He was head of a number of institutions and was the President of Royal Society of Chemistry. Professor Lewis was awarded D.Sc. Honoris Causa degree by a number of Universites in U. K., Europe, U.S.A. and Canada. He became a honorary Fellow of University College, London in 1990 and also a Honorary Fellow of UMIST in the same year. He also received the D. Univ. of Open University in 1982 and of Kingston University in 1993. Lord Lewis was elected a Foreign Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 1993.
Profesor Lewis expired on 17 July 2014.
