Professor Ashraful Haque was born in the city of Banaras (now Varanisi) in India on the 15th March, 1919.

He had his early education at Banaras and secured his M.Sc. degree in Agriculture from the Banaras Hindu University in 1947. He came to Dhaka after partition of India and accepted a research position under late Professor P. Maheshwari of the Department of Botany, Dhaka University. He obtained his Ph. D. degree in Cytology from the University of London and soon after his return to Dhaka he was appointed a Reader of Botany, Dhaka University and officiated as the Head of the Department, 1957 - 1958.

He joined the Department of Crop Botany of the newly established East Pakistan Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 1964. Professor Ashraful Haque was a Senior Fellow of the University of Oxford, U.K. during 1966 - 1967. He was Visiting Professor of the Banaras Hindu University, 1977 - 1978. He also acted as the Vice- Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.

Professor Ashraful Haque was a world reputed botanist and has made valuable original contributions in fundamental resarch in the field of Cytology and Entomology in collaboration with Professor C.D. Darlington. He was associated with a large number of scientific societies and academies. He was President of Bangladesh Botanical Society, 1979 - 1982. Professor Haque was elected a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 1974.

He breathed his last on 19 January 1982.
