Dr. Nurul Absar Khan was born in Bakshanagar, Nawabganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh on 1st February, 1924.
He passed B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Dhaka University in 1945 and 1946, respectively. He obtained Ph.D. degree from Ohio University, USA in 1950. He also secured M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and Diploma in Oils and Fats from USA.
Dr. N. A. Khan was Research Associate with some American Universities and American Industries from 1947 to 1956. He was Head of the Research Division (HRD) of East Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, 1956 - 1966 and was promoted to the Directorship of the East Regional Laboratory, Dhaka in 1966. After the independence of Bangladesh he was a Member and subsequently held the position of Director, Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) up to 1978. He was appointed Chairman of BCSIR in 1979 and retired from that position in 1981.
He was awarded the Commonwealth Visiting Professorship in U.K., 1972 - 1973.
Dr. Khan has about 300 publications of which 70 are in international journals. He published 21 monographs and 52 patents for industrial processes.
He also worked as Adviser in a number of foreign and national industries including American Oil and Fat industries.
Dr. Khan was elected a Fellow of the then Royal Institute of Chemistry, London in 1960 and a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 1975. He was also elected Fellow of the Plastic and Rubber Institute, London in 1980.
Dr. N.A. Khan breathed his last on 22 May 1986.
