Dr. Syed Hedayetullah was born in Bogra, Bangladesh in 1903.

He passed the Entrance examination from Maldah Zilla School (now in West Bengal, India) in 1920. He studied at the Presidency College, Calcutta as a resident of Baker Hostel and secured B. Sc. (Hons.) degree in Botany from Calcutta University in 1926 and M. Sc. degree in 1928. He received his Ph. D. degree in Botany (Cytology) from London University in 1932.

Dr. Hedayetullah joined Calcutta University Science College as a Senior Lecturer in Botany in 1933. But soon left to join the post of Economic Botanist, Government of the then Bengal and served there from 1935 - 1944. He became the Founder Principal of Agriculture College, Dhaka, 1944 - 1949. He was Director of Agriculture,   Government of East Pakistan, 1949 - 1956. He also served as a Liaison Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Pakistan, 1956 - 1958. He was appointed Head of the Natural Products Research Division of the then Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories, Dhaka and continued in that position from 1958 - 1964.

He was awarded a State Scholarship from the Government of the then British India and studied at King's College, London from  1929 - 1932.

Dr. Hedayetullah worked on the improvement of paddy crops, horticulture and plantation of medicinal plants. He became Scientific Adviser to the then Pakistan Jute Mills Association, 1961-1968. He retired from the government services in 1958.

Dr. Hedayetullah was member of many scientific societies and associations. He was a Founding Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences when the Academy was established in 1973 by the Fellows of the erstwhile Pakistan Academy of Sciences from the region of Bangladesh after independence of the country in 1971.

Dr. Hedayetullah breathed his last in Dhaka on 29 August 1974.
