Emeritus Professor Aminul Islam was born on 1st January 1935 at Comilla. His father was Late Alhaj Shirajul Islam and mother Late Rajia Begum.

He obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry in 1954, M.Sc. in Soil Science in 1955 from Dhaka University and Ph.D. in Soil Scence from Michigan State University, USA in 1962.

Dr. Aminul Islam started his professional career as a Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science, Dhaka University in 1956. He held the positions of Assistant Soil Scientist 1957-58, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute; Deputy Director, Soil Survey Department, Dhaka (1961-62); Assistant Professor (1958-61), Associate Professor (1964-73), Professor (1973-1979) and Selection Grade Professor (1979-1996), Department of Soil Science, Dhaka University. He became the Vice-Chancellor of National University in 1996 and continued up to 2000. Professor Islam later joined as Vice- Chancellor, Daffodil International University in January 2002 and continued upto 2011.

Professor Islam was awarded President’s Gold Medal 1981, Gold Medal awarded jointly by Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and Third World Academy of Sciences 1986; Independence Day Gold Medal 1990; Comilla Foundation Gold Medal 1991; and renowned Soil Scientist Award 1993 by Dhaka University Soil Science Ex- Students Association.

Professor Islam supervised 60 M.Sc., four M. Phil. and 23 Ph.D. students and published 135 research papers in national and   international journals.

Professor Islam was the Head of the Department of Soil Science, Dhaka University, 1967-1968, 1969-1970 and 1972-1973 and Chairman, 1973-1976. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences for eight years (1977-1981, 1983-1985 and 1987-1989); Director, Centre for Advanced Research in Biological Sciences, 1981 - 1983 and Director, Biotechnology Research Centre, Dhaka University, 1989-1991.

Dr. Islam was World Bank Consultant as Agronomy Expert in Sri Lanka, 1984; FAO Soil Research Consultant, 1987; Agriculture Research Evaluation Specialist of World Bank (Consultant), 1988; FAO Consultant as Soil Management Expert, 1993; Local Consultant for Hazra Engineering International, 1984-1985 and Consultant for SARM Engineering Farm, 1989.

Professor Islam had received Fulbright Felowship offered by the US Government (1959-1962), SEATO Fellowship (1965), Nuffield Foundation fellowship (1968-1969) and DAAD Fellowship (1978).

He was President, Bangladesh Rover Scouts (1996-2000); President, Bangladesh Soil Science Society (1998-2002); President, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Sciences for two terms (1990-1994); General Secretary, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Sciences for two terms (1984–1985 and 1988– 1989); Fellow, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences from 1978; General Secretary, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (1993–1997); Member, Council of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (2008-2012); Member, Editorial Board, Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Member, Editorial Board, Encyclopedia of Bangladesh Projects, Asiatic Society (1998–2002); Member, Editorial Board, Biggan Biswakosh, Bangla Academy; Member, Editorial Board, Journal of Sciences, BAAS (1993–1997); Treasurer, Bangladesh Football Federation, 1990 and 1991; Life Member, Bangla Academy and its Council Member (1989–1995); Treasurer, University of Dhaka Students’ Union (1984–1986); Life Member, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Member on Education Policy (1998–1999); Life Member, Bangladesh Soil Science Society; Bangladesh Chemical Society; University of Dhaka Alumni; and Salimullah Muslim Hall Alumni.

Professor Islam participated, presented paper and led delegations at international seminars/symposia/ scientific meetings held in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, New Zealand, North Korea, USA and Canada. He also visited Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj in 2001.

Professor Islam expired on 29 November 2017. He was the President of the Bangladesh Academy of Science at the time of his death.
