Professor Quazi Motahar Husain was born in Kushtia in July, 1897.

He passed the Matriculation examination from Kushtia High School, Bangladesh in 1915 with distinction. He studied I.Sc. at the Presidency College, Calcutta but passed the examination from Rajshahi College in 1917. He obtained B.A. Honours degree in Physics from Dhaka College in 1919 and Masters degree in Physics also from Dhaka College in 1921. He obtained Ph.D. degree in Statistics from the University of Dhaka in 1951.

Professor Husain joined Dhaka University in 1921 as a Lecturer in Physics and continued in that capacity till 1949. He became Reader in Statistics in 1951 and Professor in 1953. He used to deliver lectures in Mathematics at Dhaka University from 1949 - 1959. He retired from Dhaka University in 1961, but continued to work as Supernumerary Professor of Statistics till-1964. On the establishment of the Institute of Statistical Research and Training in July, 1964, Professor Husain joined as its first Director and relinquished the charge in December 1966. After the independence of Bangladesh, Professor Husain was made a National Professor in recognition of his outstanding achievements in various scientific fields. Professor Husain was also Head of the Department of Statistics, Dean of the Faculty of Science of Dhaka University and member of the  Syndicate.

Professor Husain was awarded the title of Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1960 by the then Government of Pakistan.

He has written a number of books on Mathematics and Statistics and published a large number of research papers in the national and international journals of science. He also made valuable contributions in Bengali literature. He was an outstanding chess and tennis player.

He was a Member of the Agricultural Enquiry Commission popularly known as Lord Boyd Commission. He was also the Vice-President of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta.

Professor Husain was a Founder Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.

Professor Quazi Motahar Husain expired at the age of 84 on 09 October 1981.
