Professor Abdul Qayyum Sarker was born at Rangpur, Bangladesh in 1936.
He earned B.Sc. Hons. in Physics, Rajshahi Univesity, 1956; M.Sc. Dhaka Unviersity, 1958.
He was a Lecturer in Physics, Rajshahi Univesity, 1959 – 1960; 1851 Exhibition (London) Scholar, 1960 - 1963; Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics from Birmingham University, England, 1963. He was a Research Associate, University of California, at San Diego, 1963- 1965, and Rockefeller University, New York, 1965 - 1966. Dr. Sarker was a Reader and then Professor of Physics, Islamabad University, 1966-1969, Visiting Associate Professor in Theoretical Physics, University of Oregon, 1969-1971. He was a Reseach Fellow of the Royal Society (London), 1971-1972. Chief Scientific Officer, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, 1972 - 1973. Associate, International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, 1974 - 1980. He was Professor of Physics, Dhaka University, Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1973 and Chairman of the Department from 1988 - 1991.
He has about 50 published papers in international journals. Professor Qayyum worked in Theoretical Particle Physics and Solid State Physics, specially in Low Energy Necleon Scatter from light Nuclei, Guage-Independent Formulation of Quantum Electrodynamics Dispersion Theory, SU (6) Symmetry and Quark Model, Current Algebra and also in semiconductors.
He attended a number of International conferences in High Energy Physics and in Solid State Physics.
Professor Sarker is currently residing abroad.
