Professor Syed Nurun Nabi was born at Barisal in Bangladesh on 4 December, 1934.

He was educated at Dhaka and Cambridge Universities. He earned B. Sc. (Honours) in Chemistry, 1954; M.Sc. in Chemistry, 1955 and Ph.D. (Cambridge), 1959 (Inorganic Chemistry).

Dr. S.N. Nabi was a Lecturer, Dhaka University (1959-1964); Reader, Dhaka University (1964 - 1969); Professor, Islamabad University (1969 - 1972); and Professor, Dhaka University (1972- 2011). He was Chairman, Department of Chemistry, Dhaka University (1976 -1979). Director, Bose Centre for Advanced Study and Research, Dhaka University (1989-1992).

Professor S.N. Nabi’s principal areas of research included Chemistry of the fluorocarbon compounds; Synthesis and structures of inorganic polymers and their applications; Chemistry of the phosphazene ring systems; the basicity and structures of the phosphazenes; the co-ordination chemistry of the phosphazene ring systems; mechanistic studies of the reactions of the cyclophosphazenes. Chemistry of the sulphur compounds; sulphur halides and pseudohalides; sulphur-nitrogen ring systems of compounds; sulphur polymers; co-ordination chemistry of the sulphur nitrogen ring systems with the transition metals. Chemistry of hydrazine; hydrazinolysis of metal chlorides; coordination chemistry and redox properties of the transition metal hydrazine complexes. Chemistry of the non-aqueous ionizing solvent systems; solubility of inorganic compounds in acetone; physico-chemical studies on the nature of the solvent-solute interaction in acetone; phase studies; viscometric mesurements; electrical properties and salt-like reactions of covalent halides in acetone and glacial acetic acid solutions. Salt-like compounds of sulphur and phosphorus and silicon. Reactions of urea with inorganic acid halides; Acid halide induced polyurea condensation processes.

Dr. Nurun Nabi was a Member of the Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge; 1851 Royal Exhibition Scholar (1957-1959) at the Cambridge Univesity; H. P. Roy Gold Medalist, Dhaka University (1965); Post-doctoral Fellow, London University (BirkbeckCollege) (1964 - 1967); The Royal Society Research Fellow (1975-1976) at the Univerisities of Cambridge and London. Dr. S. N. Nabi was a Visiting Professor, Cambridge Univesity (1975);

He was Honorary Research Fellow of Birkbeck College, London (1976). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (F.R.S.C.) London, in 1976; and a Chartered Chemist (C. Chem.). He was elected a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 1982.

Dr. Nurun Nabi expired on 04 March 2021.
