Dr. Shah Muhammad Hasanuzzaman was born on 1 January, 1925.


He obtained Ph.D. in 1959 from Texas A & M University. M. S. from Arkansas State University, U.S.A in 1957. Previously he obtained B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Agric. Inst. of Dhaka University) in 1945 and 1947, respectively. Dr. Zaman’s research areas included plant genetics, rice, wheat, maize and cotton breeding and agronomic work. 


Dr. Hasanuzzaman was Advisor on Agriculture of Japan International Cooperation Agency, Dhaka, upto 1992; Member, Agriculture, Planning Commission (1987 to 1990); Liaison Scientist of International Rice Research Institute from January 1985 to December 1986; Director General of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) from 1977 to 1984 and Associate Director of BRRI from 1974 - 1977. Previously he served the Department of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture in various capacities. He was Member, Board of Governors of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council; Chairman, Strategic Research Plans of National Agriculture Research Council; Chairman, Strategic Research Plans of National Agriculture Research System of BARC; Member, Pay and Agriculture Commissions of Bangladesh, 1996 - 1998. President, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS); Vice- President, Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture; Vice-Chairman, International Rice Commission, FAO, 1985 - 1986. He was also Member of the Syndicate of Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU), Board of Regents IPSA (Now Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University); Academic Council, Chittagong University; Member, Agriculture Planning Commission (1987-1990), Liaison Scientist, International Rice Research Institute in Sub-Saharan Countries of Africa (1985 and 1986).


Dr. Zaman earned Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Gold Medal in 1969; Independence Day Award, 1978; Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Bangladesh Krishi Unnayan Ratna; and National Professor by Viswa Unnayan Samsad, Calcutta, India, 1983; One of the "Six Best Intellectuals" by Lions Club, Dist. 315, Bangladesh (1985); Board of Governors of BRRI renamed its Genetic and Seed Resource Building as HASANUZZAMAN Hall (1987). Board of Governors of Bangladesh Agricultural Institute (BARI) elected him as Scientist Emeritus (1986); Sher-e-Bangla Padak by Bangladesh Agric. Institute (1986). He was given Gold Medal by Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (1988); Krishibid Foundation-65 Padak by K.B.F. (65) in 1992. Bangladesh Rice Foundation and Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad also presented him seperately Plaques of Honour for his outstanding contribution to develop HYV Rice to make Bangladesh self-sufficient in food. The farmers of Moheswar Chada of Kaligunj P.S. (Jhenaidah/Jashore) honoured him with a gold medal for helping farmers to grow high yielding varieties (HYVs).


His publications and reports are more than 80 (including 8 books). Dr. Hasanuzzaman was Ex-officio Professor of Dhaka University (DU) and BAU. Guided many post graduate students leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees (Five students received Ph. D. degrees, three from DU and two from BAU).


He attended many seminars and workshops of International Rice Commission (FAO), International Rice Research Institute, Wheat Genetic Symposium, Plant Breeding workshops; Workshops on Wetland (IUCN), International Workshop on Irrigation and     Drainage etc.


He was a Life Member of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh; Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science; Fellow, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences; Plant Breeding and Genetic Society of Bangladesh; Crop Science Society of Bangladesh; Founder Member of Bangladesh Agriculture Academy and Bangladesh National Rose Society.


Dr. Shah Muhammad Hasanuzzaman expired on 9 October 2011.
