Professor Syed M. Humayun Kabir was born on 3 December, 1936 son of Late Alhaj Dr. M. Nazabat Ali and Late Mrs. Hayatun Nissa.


His early education was at the Chartarabaria Primary School and Shahzadpur Minor School. Matriculation from Ullapara Merchants’ High School, 1954; I.Sc. from Edward College, Pabna, 1956; B.Sc. (Hons.), 1959 and M.Sc. 1960 in Zoology, Dhaka University; Ph.D. in Entomology from Texas A & M University, USA in 1966.


He was Lecturer in Zoology, University of Dhaka, 1961-1962; Senior Lecturer in Entomology, E. P. Agricultural University, Mymensingh, 1965-1970; Resident Biologist, Institute for Advancement of Science and Technology Teaching, Dhaka, 1970- 1974; Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, 1974-1978, Professor, 1978-2005. Insect taxonomy, dung beetles, ecology of forest inhabiting spiders, parasitic Hymenoptera, and pest management.


He earned Honorary Ph.D. and Samsad Professorship from the World Development Parliament, India, 1983. Crest of Honor presented by Bangladesh Society for Parasitology, BAU, Mymensingh 2008; Jahangirnagar Univ., Dept. of Zoology, 2012.

Professlor Kabir published 74 research publications in national and international journals. He has authored two text books: (i) General Zoology (In Bangla), published by Bangla Academy, 2004; and (ii) College Zoology. He was contributing authors for: Education and Society, Published by Professors World Peace Academy, USA, 1988; Violence: Roots and Resolutions, published by The Griffin Press, New Delhi, 1989; Muslims Contributions to Science and Technology, Islamic Foundation, Dhaka. He has also published some popular scientific articles, research notes and book reviews. He has supervised research work of 12 Ph.D., 7 M.Phil. and 52 M.Sc. and M.Sc. (Ag.) students.


He was editor and contributor of Science Encyclopedia (In Bangla, Zoology portion), published by Bangla Academy, Dhaka, 5 Vols. 1996-2005. Subject Editor of Banglapedia, the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh, 10 vols. in English and 10 vols. in Bangla, published by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, 2005. Editor (Faunal parts) of the Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh, 28 vols. in Enghish and 28 vols. in Bangla, 2009, published by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. Member, Editorial Committee of Food, Health and Environment the Proceedings of the 5th Bangladesh -Japan joint International Conference, 2010.  Editor, Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Science, 2006-2008; Chairman of Editorial Board 2000–2001, Dhaka University Journal of Biological Sciences, Member, 1989-1991, Editor, 1999-2001; Member of Editorial Board, Dhaka Vishwavidyalaya Patrika, 1990 and 1991; Member of Editorial Board, International Third World Studies Journal & Review, USA, 1986-1987; Editor-in-Chief, Bangladesh Journal of Zoology, for about 10 years; Member of Editorial Board, Bangladesh Journal of Life Sciences, 1999-2007. Editor, Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, 2012-2015.


He participated in International Conferences held in Bangkok, Thailand, 1984; Geneva, Switzerland, 1985; Washington DC, USA, 1986; Los Angles, USA, 1988; Seoul, South Korea, 1992; Bergen, Norway, 1995; Oslo, Norway, 1998. Also visited England, India, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.


He was Fellow, Zoological Society of Bangladesh; Member, Bangladesh Association for Advancement of Science; Life Member, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh; Member, Entomological Society of America, 1965-1967; Fellow, Royal Entomological Society of London, 1966-1969; Member, Bangladesh Entomological Society; Life Member, Bangladesh Society for Parasitologists; Member, Commonwealth Human Ecology Council Bangladesh, Executive Committee Member, 1991 and 1992; Honorary Member, Young Entomologist Society, USA; Member, Professors World Peace Academy.


He was elected Fellow, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 2000
