Prof. Md. Abu Bin Hasan Susan was born on 03 March 1971 in a Daudkandi, Cumilla, Bangladesh.
He received his PhD degree from Yokohama National University, Japan in 2000 and was awarded with Venture Business Laboratory, Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS), Core Research for Evolutionary Science and Technology (CREST) and Bridge postdoctoral fellowships. He was awarded with both the Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degree in 1991 (1993) and Master of Science in Physical Chemistry degree in 1994 (1995) from the Department of Chemistry, University of Dhaka (DU) with 1st class. He secured 1st division with star marks from Daudkandi Pilot High School, Cumilla (1986) and 1st Division with star marks from Dhaka College, Dhaka (1988).
He is a Professor of Chemistry of Dhaka University, Bangladesh since 2013. He joined the Department as a Lecturer in 2000, an Assistant Professor in 2014 and an Associate Professor in 2009. He served as a Guest Faculty of the Department of Finance of DU from 2012-2014 and Department of Chemistry, BUET in 2020. He has also been a Guest Faculty of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, DU since 2017. He served as a Resource Person and Course Advisor of Teachers’ Training Programme in Chemistry of National University, Gazipur. He has been an expert member of the Curriculum Development of the Department of Chemistry of Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Mawlana Bhashani Science & Technology University, Cumilla University, Barishal University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University, and Jashore University of Science and Technology and Department of Dyes and Chemicals Engineering, Bangladesh University of Textiles.
His research achievements have been recognized by a number of awards/declaration of awards including Dean’s Award of Faculty of Science, DU (2011), University Grants Commission Awards of Bangladesh in Physical Sciences (2011) and Chemical, Biological and Environmental Sciences (2013), BAS Gold Medal senior group, 2012 and United Group Paper Awards (2016 and 2017) for seven articles. He received Silver Medal of the Society of Promotion of Education and Science, India in 2019. He was also nominated for Federation of Asian Chemical Society (FACS) Distinguished Young Chemists Award by Bangladesh Chemical Society (2005) and for Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Prizes for Science and Technology (2010) by Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO. The novelty and scientific interest of his research work (Chem. Commn. 2003, 938-939) was recognized by the Chemical and Engineering News of the American Chemical Society. The work was the top news in the Science and Technology Concentrates of the scientific magazine, which published the extract as an Article on 21 April 2003. He received award for the Successful Completion of Reading Books for XI students by Biswya Sahitya Kendro, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1985. He received a number of scholarships throughout his academic career which include: Primary School Scholarship of the Mujibur Rahman Trust (1980)-1st position, Junior High School Scholarship Talent Pool, 1st Grade (1983), S.S.C. Scholarship of the Board of Secondary and Higher School Certificate, Fuller Memorial Trust Scholarship, Shahidullah Hall Scholarship, Kudrat-E-Khuda Foundation Scholarship, Dhaka University Scholarship for Brilliant Results, and MEXT Scholarship of Japan (1996-2000).
He has 165 peer-reviewed articles including 17 book chapters and 18 proceedings. He has 276 abstracts published as contributions in scientific meetings including Plenary, Keynote and Invited talks in international conferences in several countries. He publishes regularly in high impact factor Journals published by American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, Electrochemical Society, and Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor and Francis, etc. He has a rich research profile with citations: 9253, h-index: 25, and i-10 index: 59.
Prof. Susan is a member of Editorial Board, Barishal University Journal of Science and an Advisory Board Member, Journal of Technological Research, Sharda University, India. He also served as a member of the Editorial Board, News Bulletin published by Bangladesh Chemical Society. He also served as a Guest Editor of Journal of Chemistry, (Hindawi Publishing Corporations) and The Open Colloid Science Journal, (Bentham Open Science Publications).
He served as an Assistant House Tutor of Shahidullah Hall of DU. He is currently a House Tutor of Salimullah Muslim Hall, DU.
He was the Joint Secretary, Executive Committee, Bangladesh Chemical Society (2011-15) and Executive, Management Committee, Institute of Chemists and Chemical Technologists, Bangladesh (2009-10). He was also the National Representative, Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) (2014-17). He is a Council Member of the Renewable Energy Research Centre, and Bose Centre for Advanced Research in Natural Sciences of DU, Bangladesh. He is also a member of the Research and Co-ordination Committee of the Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences of DU, Bangladesh. He has been the Vice President of Dhaka University Chemistry Alumni Association (DUCAA) since 2018. He is also a Partner of the Hokkaido University Ambassador and Partner (HUAP) Activities of Sapporo, Japan.
He is a fellow of IUPAC and Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS). He was a Research Fellow of the Bose Centre of DU, Venture Business Laboratory, Yokohama National University, Japan, the JSPS, Research Fellowship of CREST of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and Bridge Fellow of the JSPS He has been a Life Member of Bangladesh Chemical Society, Bangladesh Association for Advancement of Science (BAAS), Network of Instrument Technical personnel and User scientists of Bangladesh (NITUB), Dhaka University Alumni Association, DUCAA, Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association, and Japanese Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh. He has also been a member of Electrochemical Society, Inc., Society of Polymer Science, Japan, Sakura Science Club, JST, Japan, and Society for Promotion of Education and Science, India.
He visited 12 countries of the world. These include: Japan, USA (Hawaii, New Mexico, Texas), South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Poland, India, Nepal, Croatia, Pakistan, and China.
