Prof. Dr. M. Shamsher Ali

Prof. Dr. M. Shamsher Ali was born on 9 November, 1940 at    Bheramara, Kushtia.

Dr. Ali passed Matriculation in 1954 from Jessore Zilla School, Intermediate Science, 1956 from Rajshahi Govt. College; B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics, 1959 from Dhaka University; M.Sc. (Physics), 1960 from Dhaka University, Diploma in Advanced Studies in  Science 1962 (Manchester University, UK); Ph.D. in Theoretical Nuclear Physics, 1965 (Manchester University, U.K.).

Dr. Ali was Scientific Officer, Atomic Energy Commission   (AEC),   1961-1965; Senior Scientific Officer, AEC 1965-1970; Principal Scientific Officer, AEC - 1970-1974; Chief Scientific Officer, AEC, 1975 - 1982, Professor of Physics, University of Dhaka, 1982-2006. Also visited and worked in a number of research institutions in Europe and America.

Professor M. Shamsher Ali taught at the graduate and post- graduate levels in the Dhaka University and abroad. Subjects taught include quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, mathematical methods of physics, etc. Developed a special aptitude for teaching physics in an integrated manner pointing to the unity of physics and suggested at national and international conference ways and means of creating interest in physics and mathematics education at all levels.

Professor Ali was awarded a number of scholarships including  the Hari Prasanna Roy Gold Medal in 1974 by the University of Dhaka for original contributions to Nuclear Physics; as a mark of recognition of career and contributions to Nuclear Physics, he had been made life-long Honorary Professor of Physics in 1973 by the University of Dhaka; was awarded the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Glod Medal in 1984 (Physical Sciences, Senior Group); obtained the TWNSO (Third World Network of Scientific Organisations) Award in 1990; obtained Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Gold Medal in 2004; obtained TWAS-ROCASA Award in 2013 for the promotion of the Public Understanding of Science; Was elected to Honorary Fellowship (the highest award) of the World Innovation Foundation (HQ in UK), founded by the Nobel Laureate Dr Glenn Seaborg; was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Higher Education Leadership by the International Leadership Colloquium (Malaysia) on 10th Nov, 2009.

He published a large number of research papers in international journals of repute. The fields of research include the following: Study of three body problems in Nuclear Physics; Resonating group studies of light nuclei; Phenomenological studies of the alpha-alpha interaction; Study of lambda-nucleon and lambda- lambda interactions from analysis of lambda hypernuclear system; Study of non-local interactions in the co-ordinate representation; Study of equivalent local interactions; Studies of the local as well as non-local folding model for nuclear reactions; published a book on "Making Math Fun" in Feb, 2014.

Dr. Ali was Director, Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka, 1970 - 1978. Founder Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh Open University (1992- 1996). Founder Vice Chancellor, Southeast University (2002-2010); President, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (2004-2012).

Professor Ali is a Fellow of the Bangladesh Physical Society; Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences since 1978; Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS) since 1986 and Council Member of IAS 1989 - 1994; Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, since 1989. He is a Council Member of TWAS for Central and South Asia (2019-2022). He is a Fellow of Bangla Academy (the most prominent cultural organisation in Bangladesh) He was an Associate, a Senior Associate and Honorary Associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) at Treiste, Italy. General Secretary of BASSP (Bangladesh Association of Scientists and Scientific Professions), 1978-1981. Former Member, Board of Governors of the Bangladesh Science Museum; Former Member, National Council of Science and Technology (NCST) of the Govt. of Bangladesh.

Professor Ali participated in seminars, symposia and confernces almost all over the world.

For Popularization of Science and Technology Prof. Ali delivered more than 300 talks on TV and Radio including some on BBC on different aspects of Science and Technology; wrote several articles and monographs on Popular Science topics; has contributed a chapter titled "Television as a medium of Science Communication" to a Springer Publication titled "Communicating Science to the Public" (July, 2014); Interested in the synthesis of science and religion.
